Shimla, the former the summer capital during the British Rule is built over several hills and connecting ridges. The important hills are Jakhu(8050 ft), Prospect Hill (7140 ft), Observatory Hill ( 7050 ft), Elysium Hill (7400 ft), and Summer Hill (6900 ft). Manali, which is located at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level has a cool atmosphere that makes it a perfect haven for the ones afflicted by the hot Indian summers. Visit Rohtang Pass which is the highest point on the Manali-Keylong road, providing a wide panoramic view of mountains rising far above clouds, is truly a breath taking sight. Haridwar, a sacred town which is 52 km from Dehra Dun, marks the emergence of the Ganga into the plains, piercing through the Shiwalik Range. Gaurikund has a temple dedicated to Gauri and thermal springs of medicinal value are noteworthy. It is believed to be the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to attain Lord Shiva. Visit Kedarnath that has the temple built in 8th century A.D. by Adi Guru Shankaracharya which lies adjacent to the site of an ancient temple built by Pandavas. Behind the Kedarnath Temple lies the Samadhi or final resting-place of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. It is believed that after establishing the four dhams in India he went for his samadhi at an early age of 32 years. Visit Auli that is flanked by Coniferous and Oak forests offers a panoramic view of Himalayas Peaks. Here, the seasonal skiers have clean stretches of absolutely untouched slopes to sport on. Winter skiing is now being professionally run at the Auli slopes.
